Two of the most beloved manual brew methods — pour over and French press — couldn't be more different in how they work and what they produce. Both make exceptional coffee, but they suit different tastes, routines, and coffee styles. Let's compare them head to head.
How They Work
Pour Over
Hot water is poured slowly and deliberately over coffee grounds in a filter (paper or metal). The water passes through the grounds and filter, dripping into a carafe or mug below. The filter catches oils and fine particles, producing a clean, clear cup.
Popular pour over devices: Hario V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave, Origami
French Press
Coarsely ground coffee steeps in hot water for 4 minutes, then a metal mesh plunger is pressed down to separate the grounds from the liquid. Because there's no paper filter, oils and micro-fines remain in the cup.
Flavor Profile
- Pour Over: Clean, bright, nuanced. Highlights delicate flavor notes like fruit, florals, and acidity. Great for light and medium roasts.
- French Press: Full-bodied, rich, bold. The oils add texture and depth. Great for medium and dark roasts.
Ease of Use
- Pour Over: Requires more attention — you control the pour rate, bloom time, and water distribution. There's a learning curve, but it's meditative once you get it.
- French Press: More forgiving and straightforward. Add grounds, add water, wait 4 minutes, press. Great for beginners.
Equipment & Cost
- Pour Over: Dripper ($15–$50), filters (ongoing cost), gooseneck kettle recommended ($30–$100), scale helpful
- French Press: Press ($20–$60), no filters needed, any kettle works
Brew Time
- Pour Over: 3–4 minutes (plus 30-second bloom)
- French Press: 4 minutes steep + press time
Both are similar in total time, but pour over requires active attention while French press is mostly hands-off.
Which Should You Choose?
- Choose Pour Over if you love bright, clean, complex flavors and enjoy the ritual of brewing
- Choose French Press if you prefer a bold, rich, full-bodied cup and want a simple, forgiving process
- Love both? Many coffee enthusiasts own both and choose based on their mood or the coffee they're brewing
Best Coffee for Each Method
- Pour Over: Light to medium roast, single origin, washed or honey process
- French Press: Medium to dark roast, blends or natural process single origins
At Brew Buddy Roast, we have coffees perfectly suited for both methods. Not sure which to try? Check the tasting notes on each bag — bright and fruity points to pour over, rich and chocolatey points to French press.
