Which Brew Buddy Roast Coffee Makes the Best Espresso?

Which Brew Buddy Roast Coffee Makes the Best Espresso?

Espresso is unforgiving. It magnifies everything — the good, the bad, and the bitter. The wrong bean at the wrong roast level will give you a sour, flat, or astringent shot. The right one? Pure magic in a 2-ounce cup.

We went through every single coffee in our lineup — origin, elevation, processing method, roast level, and flavor profile — and ranked them for espresso. No guesswork. Just coffee science and a lot of passion.

Here's what we found.

☕ What Makes a Great Espresso Bean?

Before we get into the rankings, here's the quick science behind why some coffees shine as espresso and others don't:

  • Body & sweetness — Espresso needs density. Thin, delicate coffees get lost under pressure.
  • Lower acidity — High-acid coffees can taste sharp and sour when concentrated. Balance is key.
  • Elevation — Higher elevation = denser beans = more complex flavor under pressure. Generally a good thing, but roast level matters too.
  • Processing method — Natural and wet-hulled processed beans tend to have more body and sweetness, ideal for espresso. Washed coffees can be stunning but require more precision.
  • Roast level — Medium to medium-dark is the sweet spot. Dark roasts are classic; medium roasts are the modern specialty approach.

🏆 Tier 1: Born for the Portafilter

African Espresso

Origin: Kenya, Tanzania & Ethiopia | Roast: Medium/Dark

This one isn't subtle — it's literally in the name. Our African Espresso is a purpose-built blend drawing from three of the continent's most celebrated growing regions. Kenya brings brightness and structure. Tanzania adds fruit and florals. Ethiopia delivers that unmistakable complexity and depth. Together at a medium/dark roast, they produce a shot that's bold, layered, and alive. If you own an espresso machine and you haven't tried this one, fix that immediately.

African Kahawa Blend

Origin: African-grown coffees | Roast: Medium-Dark

"Kahawa" means coffee in Swahili — and this blend earns the name. Toffee, caramel, dark chocolate, raisins, cherries, black currant, and a soft floral finish. That's not a coffee description, that's a dessert menu. At medium-dark roast, this pulls a rich, sweet, complex espresso shot that'll make you question every coffee you've had before it. An absolute gem for espresso lovers who want depth without bitterness.

🥈 Tier 2: Excellent Single-Origin Espresso

Guatemala

Origin: Antigua Guatemala | Elevation: 1,200–1,616M | Roast: Medium

Antigua is one of the most storied coffee regions on earth, and for good reason. Our Guatemala brings dark chocolate, bright fruit, and butterscotch — a classic espresso trifecta. High elevation means dense beans that hold up beautifully under pressure. This is a workhorse single-origin espresso that delivers consistency and complexity in every shot.

Pro tip: Try our Whiskey Barrel Aged — a single-origin Guatemala aged 30 days in a bourbon barrel before roasting. As an espresso, it's unlike anything you've tasted. Chocolate, oak, vanilla, and a whiskey warmth that lingers. Worth every sip.

Colombia

Origin: Medellín, Antioquia | Elevation: 1,300–1,500M | Roast: Medium

Colombia is the world's most universally loved espresso origin — and ours from Medellín shows you exactly why. Dried orange, berry, and chocolate create a balanced, crowd-pleasing shot with just enough brightness to keep it interesting. If you're new to single-origin espresso, start here. You won't be disappointed.

Honduras

Origin: Marcala, La Paz | Elevation: 1,300–1,700M | Roast: Medium-Dark

Caramel, spice, and brown sugar at medium-dark roast from high-elevation Marcala. Honduras is criminally underrated as an espresso origin. The medium-dark roast gives it the body and sweetness espresso demands, while the high elevation keeps the flavor complex and clean. This one punches well above its weight.

Brazil Santos

Origin: Paraná & São Paulo | Elevation: 750–1,050M | Roast: Medium

Brazil is the backbone of most commercial espresso blends worldwide — and for good reason. Lower acidity, heavy body, smooth cocoa notes, and exceptional crema production. Our Brazil Santos is elegant and approachable, pulling a silky, chocolatey shot that's as satisfying as espresso gets. If you want a no-fuss, reliably great espresso, this is your bean.

Bali Blue

Origin: Kintamani, Bali, Indonesia | Elevation: 1,200–1,600M | Roast: Medium-Dark

Dark chocolate, molasses, and brown sugar from the volcanic highlands of Kintamani. Indonesian coffees processed in the wet-hulled style are espresso gold — syrupy body, low acidity, and a richness that coats the palate. Bali Blue pulls a bold, indulgent shot that's perfect for milk-based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos. The molasses sweetness cuts right through steamed milk.

🥉 Tier 3: Solid Espresso with Character

Sumatra

Origin: Aceh, Takengon | Elevation: 1,100–1,600M | Roast: Giling Basah (Wet-Hulled)

Dark chocolate, dried fruit, earthy depth, and a long lingering body. Sumatra's wet-hulled processing creates a uniquely syrupy, full-bodied cup that translates beautifully to espresso. It's unconventional as a single-origin shot, but for adventurous espresso drinkers who want something earthy and bold, Sumatra delivers in a big way.

Ethiopia Natural

Origin: Sidama Zone | Elevation: 1,700–1,900M | Roast: Medium-Light

Milk chocolate, fruity sweetness, and caramel from one of the highest-elevation growing regions in the world. Naturally processed Ethiopians are the darling of the specialty espresso world — when dialed in, they produce jammy, dessert-like shots that taste like nothing else. The medium-light roast means you'll need to dial in your grind carefully, but the reward is a shot that's genuinely extraordinary.

Nicaragua

Origin: Molino Norte, Matagalpa | Elevation: 900–1,590M | Roast: Medium

Cocoa, floral notes, and citrus tones. Nicaragua is an underrated espresso origin — the cocoa and floral combination creates a nuanced, interesting shot that rewards attention. Not the boldest espresso on this list, but one of the most elegant.

Latin American Blend

Origin: Central America & Amazon region | Roast: Medium-Dark

Nutty hints, mild fruity tones, and a gentle cocoa aftertaste. This blend is built for consistency and approachability — a reliable everyday espresso that won't challenge you but will never let you down. Great for households where espresso is a daily ritual rather than a weekend experiment.

Cowboy Blend

Roast: Dark & Medium

Cocoa, caramel, and vanilla. Our bestseller for a reason — it's bold, sweet, and satisfying. The dark/medium roast combination gives it the body espresso needs while keeping the sweetness front and center. If you want a classic, no-nonsense espresso experience, the Cowboy Blend delivers every time.

❌ Better Brewed Than Pulled

Some of our coffees are genuinely exceptional — just not for espresso. Their brightness, delicacy, and floral complexity shine in pour-over, Chemex, or French press, but get lost (or turn harsh) under espresso pressure.

  • Kenya — Bright, citrusy, effervescent. A stunning pour-over. Too acidic for espresso.
  • Tanzania — Pear, jasmine, strawberry at medium-light. Gorgeous filter coffee. Delicate for espresso.
  • Costa Rica — Sweet apple, raisin, honey. Elegant and nuanced. Better as a slow brew.
  • Peru — Salted caramel, citrus, silky smooth. Lovely cup. Too delicate for espresso extraction.
  • Ethiopia Natural — Listed in Tier 3 above, but worth noting: it rewards patience and precision. Not a beginner espresso bean.

The Final Shot

If you're pulling espresso at home, here's the short version:

  • Want the best of the best? → African Espresso or African Kahawa Blend
  • Want a classic single-origin shot? → Guatemala, Colombia, or Brazil Santos
  • Want bold and syrupy? → Bali Blue or Sumatra
  • Want something wild and unique? → Whiskey Barrel Aged Guatemala
  • Want reliable everyday espresso? → Cowboy Blend or Latin American Blend

Every coffee we roast is specialty grade, roasted to order, and shipped fresh. That freshness matters more for espresso than any other brew method — stale beans are the #1 enemy of a great shot.

Grind fresh. Pull with intention. Drink well.
